Are you a writer or have ambitions to become one? Humanistically Speaking magazine is keen to receive submissions from people anywhere in the world who have something to say and the ability to write good English. We're particularly interested in articles written from a humanist perspective, and about humanist communities and activities on every continent, but we do also publish articles of interest by people with worldviews other than humanism. We are a freethinking publication committed to a diversity of viewpoints. Alternatively, you may want to submit a video recording if you are a budding presenter or interviewer. These can be uploaded to our YouTube channel.
We’re also looking for people to join our friendly editorial team, either on a permanent basis or for a year. We particularly welcome applications from under-represented groups. You’d be expected to attend two online editorial meetings per month (usually 09:30 UK time for about an hour on Mondays) and invited to write to a monthly theme which is decided at least two months in advance of publication. A typical theme might be something like “democracy” or “the human body”. Articles can be from 800 to approximately 1500 words, although we do occasionally include “long read” articles. You would be expected to fact-check your articles and ensure that any images you would like to use are free to use. We also meet in person in the south of England once a year for our annual meeting. We provide an online link to this if you are unable to attend in person.
Articles are edited by our senior editors. This is to improve readability, grammar and punctuation to align with our house style and editorial standards. We try to keep this as “light touch” as possible.
Humanistically Speaking is an independent online magazine run entirely by volunteers, and therefore we are unable to offer a salary. But you will gain invaluable experience and have the satisfaction of knowing that you are contributing to a publication that seeks to examine issues of global importance from a humanist perspective. If you think this might be something for you then please send a sample of your writing, of at least 500 words, to humanistically.speaking@gmail.com or text David Warden on + 44 (0)7910 886629, and tell us why you are keen to join our team.
We look forward to hearing from you.
